Tijuana
Tijuana, and its neighbor Mexicali, have the largest concentration of Maquiladoras, or foreign
manufacturing operations, anywhere in Mexico with more than 800 operations. The region is an
obvious Mexican location for companies from the Western US and has traditionally been the
preferred location in Mexico for Asian companies. The area has focused on the electronics
industry but in recent years strong demand from the medical device industry and the aerospace
industry has diversified the base of the
industrial market.
Both Tijuana and Mexicali are large cities; Tijuana with more than 2.5 million residents and Mexicali with more than 1.2 million inhabitants. Both are attractive retail and distribution markets. Given Asia Pacific trends and the current exodus of industry from Southern California, these markets will be very attractive to the US manufacturing sector and the investors who support the industry.
