  • Cushman & Wakefield Wins Top Environmental Leadership Award

    6 Dec, 2007, Sacramento, CA

Cushman & Wakefield, Inc. announced today it has won the state of California's 2007 Governor's Environmental and Economic Leadership Award (GEELA) together with Adobe Systems Incorporated, for sustainable practices and services showcased at Adobe's headquarters facilities in San Jose. The award, issued by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, is California's highest and most prestigious environmental honor.

Cushman & Wakefield was the only "Big Three" Commercial Real Estate Services firm honored with such an award in 2007.

The GEELA award recognizes individuals, organizations and businesses that have demonstrated exceptional leadership for voluntary achievements in conserving California's resources, protecting and enhancing the environment, and building public-private partnerships.

"This honor recognizes Cushman & Wakefield's commitment to providing sustainable real estate solutions for our clients," said Bruce W. Ficke, Executive Vice President, global head of Cushman & Wakefield's Client Solutions Group. "Accomplishments that are recognized by an award as prestigious as the GEELA demonstrate the critical role industry leading firms such as Adobe and Cushman & Wakefield play in reducing greenhouse gas emissions related to building operations, and enhancing the overall environmental performance of buildings. We are fortunate to collaborate with clients such as Adobe who recognize both the economic and environmental value of high performance buildings."

Cushman & Wakefield was recognized for its extensive work with Adobe in green retrofitting the company's one million square foot corporate headquarters in San Jose. Initiatives like installing drought resistant landscaping, diverting waste, and installing technology to reduce energy consumption have contributed to a total return on investment of approximately 120 percent.

As part of this comprehensive greening strategy, Cushman & Wakefield assisted Adobe in reducing greenhouse gas emissions through a reduction in electricity and natural gas use. Significant efficiencies in water consumption were also achieved through a reduction in domestic water use and the implementation of irrigation best practices.

The Adobe project also achieved the first triple platinum LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification by the U.S. Green Building Council for existing buildings. Through its environmental accomplishments, Adobe is leading by example, hosting public workshops and promoting sustainable operations and maintenance practices in the green building as well as the commercial real estate communities.

The Governor's Environmental and Economic Leadership Awards program was established in 1993. The award program is administered by the California Environmental Protection Agency and the Resources Agency in collaboration with the State and Consumer Services Agency, the California Department of Food and Agriculture, and the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency.
